|Why register .ru?|
|Russia is the largest--ninth-most populous-- country in the world. But Russia is one of the world's most sparsely populated and urbanized and about half of the country's total area is forested. The Moscow Metropolitan Area is the largest metropolitan area in Europe and is among the largest in the world, with more than 20 million residents. It is approximated that one quarter of the world's fresh water comes from the world's largest forest reserves and lakes within Russia. Russia is home to Lake Baikal, which is nestled deep in Siberia and holds the title for the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lake in the world. Russia is famous for its Vodka, but also Matryoshka dolls, the Hermitage, and its Moscow metro system--it's celebrated as one of the world’s most fascinating and beautiful. Not only because of it's elaborate design, but also because it is one of the world’s largest metro systems complete with 229 stations and 14 lines.
If you conduct business from within Russia, it is time to register a .ru domain extension. Registering a dot 'RU' country code extension (top level domain name) will increase credibility for your business across the globe. Why? Country-code domains are meant specifically for businesses that do business within a particular country--in this case, Russia. The .com domain (and other generic TLDs) are not targeted and that online space is saturated--and you likely already have the .com for your business.
Extend your brand presence with a more relevant, shorter domain--a ccTLD that differentiates you from competitors. Identify yourself as an official Russian business owner and give your clients and constituents more confidence as they interact with you online. Country code domains also help you rank higher in local search results.
November is the month when a Cyrillic domain zone was born - .?? (Russian Federation). Russia became the first country that allows top-level domains in non-Latin characters.
Up until now, governments, companies and individuals could register domain names based on different languages only in Latin transliteration. The current Internet domains system will go much further allowing Cyrillic characters in a URL.
The final decision to introduce Cyrillic URLs was made in October 30, 2009 when the ICANN finally approved the request to let different states use their national alphabets for domain names. On November 16, the Russian Coordination Center for National Intern Domain (RU-Center) submitted an official request for creating a .?? zone. Although trademark(Sunrise) registration of Cyrillic domains starts on November 25, the first Government requests were already submitted on November 11. The administration of the Russian president is very likely to become the first institution in the .?? with a new URL. www.kremlin.rf
The first stage of registration starts on November 25, 2009 and will continue until March 25, 2010. Only government organizations and owners of officially recognized trademarks - there are at least eight thousand trademarks owners in Russia- will be allowed to apply for a .?? address during the first months.
Who may participate in the Sunrise registration?
Only trademark holders can submit a Sunrise registration application. The trademark should be registered under national procedure in the Russian Federation or international procedure with the specification of Russia.
The domain name can only contain Cyrillic symbols, numbers and hyphens.
Whenever required, SAFENAMES LTD may request the copy of the trademark certificate and copy of the legal entity or entrepreneur registration certificate that is valid as of the domain application submission date. ?? domains have a yearly registration term and are renewable each year.
If two or more holders of the same trademark submit applications for the same domain within the Sunrise registration period, the domain will be registered to the name of the user who was the first to have fulfilled the registration terms. Non-residents may submit Sunrise registration applications if they are holders of a registered trademark under the national procedure in the Russian Federation or international procedure with specification of Russia.
The cost is $250 + admin fee for the first year
